I can only speak for what I might do in the situation, based on my feelings, but hopefully this might help at all...
I've never been a JW but am a Christian (married to a DF'd JW); I would think that as long as I felt the mother really had total faith that the org was the "Truth" and wasn't seeming to just hold things out as a lame excuse, I'd feel compelled to be compassionate anyway. Being a Christian, I'd feel additionally compelled to help based on my beliefs, and I'd also want to prove to her that people other than JW's have hearts and actual and practical truth~!

adam was the progenitor of the whole human race, from his genes sprang the negroid, caucasian, mongoloid, indo-european and every other race on the planet.
I think it's highly possible Adam could have been anywhere from very dark black to pale, simply depending on the melanin content in his skin. I'm somewhat inclined to personally think he may have been somewhat brown, but then I know I could be wrong, but it doesn't make any difference to me.

i have no idea where to being and would like a few pointers.. there is so much here...
I think the more you get exposed to the exposure of the hidden gems of the WT, the less guilty you'll feel about maybe feeling like you might've "failed" the WT. I am a Christian married to my now DF'd JW wife, who's been going through quite a lot and just working on looking into the WT but needs to feel she's looking at more solid proof regarding prophecies, etc., so I'm going to at least get one rare WT old book about something along the lines of the failed 1925 prophecy about Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob being resurrected, etc...
I would encourage you to read the Bible for yourself, trying to maintain a neutral viewpoint as you read it to see if you can at least feel more assured that the WT definitely has taken a great many things far out of context to support most (if not all) of their major views. God bless and my best wishes for getting over the WT and religion, in general. My personal feeling is that people need a one-on-one relationship with God, and churches, Bible study groups, etc. can help but should never be a platform of control.

she was 54. just the week before he was telling me how he was worried about her mental health.

Yes; it is sometimes a major eye-opener to hear what others have experienced and how things can change so quickly in a lot of people's lives, and I've noticed at least one theme about people having depression that may not have seemed quite so bad and yet that seemed to lead to suicide. I just pray that people coming to this forum will share whenever they might be depressed, being open for some help.

That really was a brutally terrible week. Sorry all those things happened. It's really messed up how sometimes it just seems like it pours when those types of things are aweful enough in single events.
